The Secondary Genealogy
The secondary genealogy brackets the body of the Flood narrative, and it begins with the statement
of Noah’s righteousness and the naming of his sons. The body of the narrative ends with the naming of
the sons, whose descendants will populate the earth.
Genesis 6:9-10
9) These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his
time; Noah walked with God. 10) Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Genesis 9:18-19
18) Now the sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem and Ham and Japheth; and Ham
was the father of Canaan. 19) These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole earth
was populated.
